Welcome to the GNU Forever Project!

The GNU Forever Project has been inspired by 3 sources. The first is Sir Terry Pratchett's 33rd Discworld novel, Going Postal. The second is the X-Clacks Overhead project. The third is the Eve Online community. The fourth is Reddit, specifically the fan sub-reddits of r/Discworld & r/Eve.

The About page contains the background to why these sources are relevant, as well as the download links for the available browser extensions. The short version is:

  • There's a thing that sends messages over the internet that cannot be seen normally.
  • There are tools that can be plugged into our internet browsers that can detect when the website we are looking at is broadcasting a message we want to know about.
  • "A man is not dead while his name is still spoken."

The project is intended to be a permanent memorial to those we have lost: as such the homepage of this website is coded to trigger the X-Clacks-Overhead browser plugins with the name of Sir Terry Pratchett. Any person who wishes can immortalise the name of a loved one by creating a memorial page, or GNU, on this website for them.

You didn't give us songs, you gave us an entire genre. You influenced so many, and your legacy will never die. I don't ask much, I just want you...
